Many new webmasters often put hours of work into launching their website, only to find that the internet traffic simply is not there. These naive users think that search engines will automatically pick up on their content and make it available to those who are searching for it. While they are correct to a certain extent, a website will never draw in a good amount of traffic without utilizing the proper SEO (search engine optimization) techniques.
A comprehensive SEO plan can get rather complicated, but there are some quick and easy things you can do to get started, and one of them is link building. This is common in the industry and many people are doing it. It is simply putting a link on your page that goes to another website in exchange for that website providing a link to your site. Easy? Yes, and you have seen them and probably didn’t realize what function they were providing. Check it out by going to any website and hovering your mouse over a blue hypertext link and the URL of the link will be displayed.
If you’ve just put up a website and are trying to get it noticed, link building will be most successful if you approach other websites of a similar size and style to your own. Chances are they will be just as interested in working with you as you are with them. It may be difficult to get a reciprocal link request for your just launched online pet sweater store from a national powerhouse website such as the Humane Society. Stay in your own web ‘neighborhood’ and build slower, but with stronger links that suit your message.
A good source for link building is with blogs. There are now over 100,000 new blogs created each day and the topics run the gamut. You can certainly find plenty of them that relate to what you are doing with your own website, and blogs want traffic and links. Just make sure the blogs you link with have something to do with your site. Don’t waste your time linking to sites that have nothing to do with your message, as this will not create the benefit you are seeking.
Focusing on sites that mean something to your site will make it more likely that your links will be clicked on. And once visitors are on your website, they will be more likely to stay around and browse if you are pertinent. Statistics show that most people leave a website within the first 30 seconds. So remember, once you get them there, make sure they spend some time with you. That will be your next challenge.
