Is America Prepared For Tiny Automobiles?

It’s been some time because the sub-compact automobile marketplace has garnered such attention in North America. Our friends in Europe have often known the virtues of small cars. But here in North America, SUV’s have dominated parking tons at the local Pier 1 for a lot more than a decade.

However as current fuel costs inch forward and with future rates searching uncertain (they’re definitely going to be increased than today) a lot more people are buying small, fuel-efficient automobiles. We’ve seen lots of activity within the phase recently.

Toyota has launched the Yaris, Hyundai has significantly revised the Accent, Kia has updated the Rio, Honda has launched the Match, and Nissan will introduce the Versa in Might of this year. And let’s not forget Scion with the xA and xB. Having a vehicle in the sub-compact marketplace makes sense for a range of causes.

First, it introduces new, young consumers to the brand. If their experience is excellent they’ll stick using the manufacturer as they develop up and move to a bigger vehicle. Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Volkswagen, Mazda and others all got their begin in the sub-compact car marketplace.

Secondly, it offers a safety net during economic downturns. If gasoline costs rise unexpectedly, the knee-jerk reaction is to get a little, more fuel-efficient car.

And these vehicles are fuel-efficient. The new Honda Suit as an example, gets an estimated 33 miles per gallon inside the city, 38 mpg on the highway. Small automobiles provide few compromises. But these are no one-show ponies.

Beyond gas efficiency they provide respectable performance. The Toyota Yaris has 106 horsepower which might not sound like a lot, but tipping the scales at only 2315 lbs, it has a power-to-weight ratio close to that of the 220 horsepower Hummer H3. And these cars can carry just about anything. Using the rear seats up, the Honda Match can swallow 21.3 cubic ft of gear. A Ford Crown Victoria by comparison can hold 20.6 cubic ft worth of cargo inside the trunk. The domestics haven’t invested a lot in tiny cars recently, if ever. The Chevrolet Aveo is basically a re-badged Daewoo and does not supply the level of refinement as the others. The Ford Focus is larger and a lot more expensive, as is the brand new for ’06 Dodge Caliber. But with the uncertainty of gas costs and growing competition inside the segment, GM, Ford, and DaimlerChrysler would be wise to offer competitive offering in this segment and introduce first time consumers to their respective brands. For most producers, having competitive sub-compact cars has grown the company and developed manufacturer loyalty, some thing the people in Detroit have been attempting to do for some time now.
