Home Business or J.O.B.?
What do you think? As Americans, in a time of trouble and turmoil, should we tip our hat to Wal*Mart or not?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday that it expects to hire more than 22,000 people to staff its new or expanded domestic stores this year.
"During this difficult economic time, we’re proud to be able to create quality jobs for thousands of Americans this year," Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice chairman of Wal-Mart U.S., said in a statement. … read the full CNN story on minimum wage dead end jobs here:
I suppose I ought to congratulate Wal-Mart for coming up with this announcement, and CNN as well for reporting something aside from gloom and doom. It is my personal opinion that at least two thirds of the current “Global Economic Crisis” is caused by the world-wide need for 24×7 news channels to find something to ‘grab’ viewers with. But one can’t kick someone who is trying to help in the teeth, so I will give credit where it is due to Wal-Mart and CNN for reporting in prominently and positively.
But really and truly, folks, if you are out of work or otherwise “under-employed”, can this really be good news?
You well know that I write frequently about working at home and starting your own business here with a very heavy online slant. Some of you, I know, for whatever reason don’t want to make the leap into the online world just yet. That’s no problem. You are the one who knows what is best for you, and there is no one size fits all solution. I respect you for reading and then making your own decisions. But Wal-Mart “bottom feeder” J.O.B.’s (Just Over Broke)?
Come on now, we, as a people can do better than that. Even if you read this column in the public library and refuse to even touch a computer with a profit motive in mind, you are telling me that you can’t do better than Wal-Mart beginner-level jobs? Insane.
- Mow lawns in the summer and plow snow in the winter
- Clean houses (especially repos that need to be resold)
- Detail cars (especially repoed cars that still have a high street value)
- Pick up and deliver dry cleaning from and to folks in professional offices
- Pick up ‘latchkey kids’ from school and teach them cooking or sports or crafts or music
- Wash ground level store windows on a regular route
- Goes to small businesses with cash flow problems and collect debts for them on a 40% commission
- Organize closets (selling organizer systems along the way)
- Clean garages and basements (carting of and selling the ‘treasures’ people throw away)
- Tutor in your favorite HS or college subject
I mean this list could be expanded into hundreds of ideas in just an hour or two. ALL of those ideas I just threw at you off the top of my head can easily pay ore than plodding up and down the aisles of a Wal-Mart store, and they have a future, unlike Wal-Mart J.O.B.’s which virtually have none … especially if you are over 40 as I am … ever see a manager in Wal-Mart over 40? i rest my case.
Quite frankly, if you’re reading this site on a regular basis hoping to see more announcements of J.O.B’s like this one, you’re wasting you time. Build your own business, secure your own future, empower your own retirement and let the Wal-Marts of the world pull their zombie labor from some other source.
Note: There are advertisements here from time to time. But I personally am not selling anything. Note that the suggestions I jotted down above don’t require and investment larger than perhaps a squeegee or a mop. Don’t go out and buy something to make yourself a success, you can make yourself a success without buying anything. It will just waste your money and worse, waste your valuable time. Just do it.
